meanings:
Topaz is a gemstone with a long and storied history and many ascribed properties.
The name topaz originates either from the Greek name of an ancient island
(Topazios) where yellow stones were excavated or from the Sanskrit word for fire
“tapas,” referencing its fiery yellow colour. Topaz, in its purest form, is transparent
but is rarely found in nature without impurities. Impurities and heat are responsible
for the coloration of this stone. It is one of the twelve stones in the breastplate of
the ancient Hebrew High Priests, mentioned in the Book of Exodus. It is believed
that the breastplate stones together with 12 Angels protect the door to Heaven.
Topaz is a crystal of truth and forgiveness, friendship, happiness and hope. It is used
to bring health, wealth and clear-sightedness. Ancient Greeks believed Topaz could
increase strength, allow invisibility in times of emergency and change color in the
presence of poisoned food or drink. Its mystical powers waxed and waned with the
moon. It is still believed to offer protection to its holder.
