Description
Azurite is a brilliant blue copper mineral produced by oxidation of copper
ore. Named for its colour “azure,” this stone has been used as a blue
pigment in painting from Antiquity. Azurite pigment (previously mistaken
as lapis lazuli) accounts for most blues used by Medieval painters. Azurite
blues however, tend to lighten over time into green hues. This is due to
the fact that azurite weathers to become malachite through absorption
of water. Thus, azurite and malachite are often found together. Azurite is
considered a stone of transformation, communication, intuition, creativity
and inspiration. It helps expand one’s Consciousness, opening one to
inner sight. It is also an excellent stone for students as it opens the mind
and allows it to become receptive and able to retain information.
