Description
Fossil Sand Dollars, also referred to as Fossil Sea Urchins are a reminder of the diversity and mystery of the vast prehistoric waters. Found in Madagascar as a relic of the Jurassic Age (145 -200 million years ago), these beautiful fossils forge a link to the distant past. Sand Dollars are members of the Echinoid family, and are still found in aquatic communities today. The name Echinoid is derived from the Greek “echin” (spiny) and “ooid” (egg-like) as these delicate creatures exhibit both protective spines and a round shell or “test.” Displaying penta-radial symmetry (five planed), Sand Dollars have long been appreciated for their pleasing resemblance to elegant five- petaled flowers and are a perfect gift for children and adults alike.
