Is it the motherboard of a spaceship? A super metal from the future? Nope, but it is an incredible slice of the Muonionalusta Meteorite with its gorgeous, etched Widmanstatten pattern––a unique crystal shape that only occurs in space! The Muonionalusta Meteorite is among the oldest known meteorites on Earth having fallen an estimated 1 million years ago. It was first discovered in 1906 by two young children playing just outside the village of Kitkiojarvi in northern Sweden. Pieces of the meteorite, which takes its name from the Muonio River, have been found across the northernmost province of Sweden, 140 km north of the Arctic Circle. The Muonionalusta Meteorite is classified as a fine octahedrite. Its beautiful Widmanstatten crystalline structure was formed in space by a cooling process so slow that it only cooled 1-2 degrees celsius every million years! How long and far did the Muonionalusta travel before impacting the Earth? Where did it originate from? One can only imagine. But we do know that these beautiful specimens are literally out of this world!
