In recent years, questions about ethical sourcing of crystals and minerals have garnered a lot of attention. Our community is dedicated to serving humanity and respecting the environment, so naturally we wish to offer mineral specimens and fossils which are sourced in an ethical manner. Having been in the business for over three decades, we are fortunate to have established long-standing relationships of trust with a great number of suppliers and miners from around the globe. We ask them regularly about the wages and conditions for the workers along with the impact on the environment. Because we can’t always travel to the countries of origin, sometimes we have to have faith in what our suppliers say. As we prefer honesty and integrity above all things, we must admit that in this imperfect world, it is challenging to determine if all crystals are ethically sourced, as there is no formal, governing body which exists to assure this. One would have to personally visit each and every mine and observe their entire processes to verify what is happening. Thus, any crystal store which claims to be 100% fair-trade/ethically sourced, is not revealing the fuller, more complex truth.
Many semiprecious stones are sourced from small-scale mines and quarries where great care is taken to remove them so as to avoid damage to the stone itself, and subsequently, to the surrounding environment. Some deposits are discovered as a by-product of the larger mining industry which supplies the various metals, ores, limestone, clay, petroleum, natural gas, etc. that fuels nearly every facet of our modern world, to the rare, natural elements used in our cell phones, computers, TVs, etc. As these industries have no interest in semi-precious stones, others are called in to remove these crystals before they are destroyed in the process of extracting the intended resources. We have spoken with numerous geologists and miners about these practices, who appreciate that so many of these wonderful crystals are being preserved. One of the geologists who visited our store, shared her feelings––that perhaps in allowing people to see their incomparable beauty, it may in some way inspire people to connect more deeply with the Earth and generate meaningful discussions on how we, as humans, can reduce our impact on the environment in general.
At Geologic, we have a very strong commitment to do as little harm on this Earth as we can, taking inspiration from our yoga practice of ahimsa, which means harmlessness. The various charitable initiatives we support, both financially and through countless hours of volunteer work, strive to promote goodness and alleviate the sufferings of others. For years, we have offered free classes to help promote these values through meditation, education and the arts. We practice many ecologically sound methods such as being vegan, taking public transportation, driving only when necessary, car-pooling, reusing/repurposing/up-cycling things when possible and reducing our overall consumption––both in our professional and personal lives. The mission of our store is to promote love and respect for our Mother Earth, and create a positive, peaceful, welcoming and inclusive space for people to enjoy and contemplate the wonders of nature. We thank everyone who has inquired about our practices, and appreciate all who are doing their best to care for our beautiful planet and the human beings who reside upon it.
