Gemstone Meaning:
Opal is a type of quartz that contains between 1% and 21% water. This high water content makes Opal unique in the gem kingdom. Named for the Sanskrit word “upala” meaning precious stone, opals occur in a rainbow of colours, and have been used as a gemstone for centuries. Opal is also known as the “Stone of the Gods,” as the ancients believed that the storm god, jealous of the rainbow god’s beauty, broke the rainbow and the pieces of the rainbow fell to Earth, and became part of the opal. The First Nations and Native Aborigines have used opal to invoke visions and for enhancing inspiration. Opal is also known as a stone of happy dreams and changes, symbolizing hope.
