29 million years ago, on what is now the border of Libya and Egypt a meteorite impacted in the Sahara desert. The extremely high heat melted the silica-rich desert sands and formed translucent glass. This yellow glass was first discovered by humans about 10,000 years ago. It famously appeared in an amulet worn by King Tutankhamun. Composed of nearly all silica (98%), it is the purest natural glass in the world. It has a melting point of 1700°C which is 500°C higher than any other natural glass.
